Château Angelus Description

MT

The Angélus style results from the combination of bold decisions on vine varieties and an outstanding terroir. It is this unique character born of the south-facing Saint-Emilion slopes with its large proportion of Cabernet Franc that we are so pleased to meet over and over again as the vintages pass by. It is also a composition re-crafted every year in a continuous quest for excellence.

A great terroir is more complex than you might think. It is not just the land, the earth, its natural capacity to drain away water and retain humidity – limestone or clay – the proportion of different elements in it that make it warm or cold soil, rich or poor ground, well-balanced or lacking. It is also the way it is exposed at the head of a valley, on a slope or at the foot of a hill, which creates little places that can be absolutely outstanding.

The vineyard at Angélus grows in a natural amphitheatre on a south-facing slope of Saint-Emilion and at its foot, where the summer temperatures are concentrated and where growth starts earlier. The soil is naturally drained by the slope. A good distribution of limestone and clay provides a regular supply of water and minerals. The 8- to 20% proportion of clay makes these areas of land warm and early. The vines’ rootstocks are ideally suited to this terroir and the vine varieties are distributed according to the soil types: Merlot on the hill, where there is more clay and Cabernet Franc on the sandy clay-limestone soils at the foot of the hill.

The colour is dense and deep; notes of small black fruit on the nose. The attack on the palate is smooth, sensual, voluptuous, the structure is precise and refined, the particularly successful Cabernets Francs bringing elegance and a spicy freshness. The tasting ends with an indulgent finish, full of tension and flavour.

"This is a really together second wine of Angélus with a tight and focused center palate of blackberries and hints of chocolate and hazelnuts. Firm and very fine tannins and a long and persistent finish."  (4/2019)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Le Carillon d'Angélus comes bounding out of the glass with bold notes of crushed blackberries, black raspberries and wild blueberries plus hints of spice box, damp soil, smoked meats and fallen leaves plus a waft of menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black and blue fruits with firm, rounded tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and earthy. (LPB):"  (4/2019)

91-94 points Vinous

"The 2018 Le Carillon d'Angélus is laced with striking floral/savory aromatics and brisk saline notes that complement a core of bright red-toned fruit. Pliant and supple, with notable purity and class, the 2018 is gorgeous today and benefits from an extra touch of Franc that did not go into the Grand Vin. Carillon is a blend of fruit from three sources: 7 hectares around the château, 5 hectares closer to Cheval Blanc and 3 hectares in the Saint Christophe des Bardes sector. It is especially fine in 2018 and could very well turn out to be an overachiever. (AG)"  (4/2019)

91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck

"The second wine is the 2018 Le Carillon d’Angélus. It’s a more serious, elegant wine that’s 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, from vines near the estate as well as from near Cheval Blanc and Figeac (these grapes first went into this cuvée starting in 2013) as well as from near Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes. It has a fresh, focused style as well as classic notes of crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco, and earth." (5/2019)
