Who's Thomas Rivers Brown?

Originally from Sumter, South Carolina, Thomas Rivers Brown made his way to Napa Valley in the mid-1990's, after graduation from the University of Virginia and wine travels throughout France. A quick study as cellar hand and lab enologist for famed winemakers Ehren Jordan and Larry Turley of Turley Wine Cellars, in 2000 Thomas got his shot to take over as solo winemaker for a newly emerging wine project, Chiarello Vineyards. Today, Thomas spearheads winemaking operations for numerous top-echelon Napa Valley wineries in addition to Chiarello, among them Schrader, Colgin, Round Pond, Outpost, Ferrair Carrano, Maybach, Revana, TOR, C. Mondavi, Jones Family, Harris Estate, Hestan, Seaver, Black Sears, Casa Piena and more. 

According to many, including David White of The Terroirist Wine Journal, "Thomas Brown is the nation's hottest winemaker." Thomas Brown is one of only a handful of winemakers globally to have received multiple 100-point wine scores from penultimate wine critic Robert Parker Jr. of The Wine Advocate, as well as from wine critic luminary, James Laube of The Wine Spectator. In 2010, Thomas was honored as Food & Wine Magazine "Winemaker of the Year."

Thomas Rivers Brown is at it again. There are times when the peripatetic winemaker seems to be launching a new project every week. Currently working with 45 clients, Brown is responsible for 800 tons of grapes from 325 acres going into some 150 wines, and has even designed several wineries. It's a juggling act that keeps him in perpetual motion, but Brown thrives on activity.

Brown, has become one of Napa's most accomplished winemakers, handily guiding production of some of the region's most distinctive wines and sought-after brands. The grape he has ridden to stardom is Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for 85 percent of the 40,000 cases he oversees, and over the years Brown has made more than 60 Cabernets that earned classic scores from Wine Spectator. Yet his private nature and desire to deflect attention make him a man many know only by name and reputation.

"The 2017 The Dude “Nicholas” was created for our littlest big fan Nicholas Choutris.  Nicholas is the son of Yiannis Choutris, owner of Yiannis’ Wine Shop in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  As you can see from the picture below, Nicholas was drawn to The Dude wines a very early age.

Yiannis and his customers have been great supporters of The Dude wines over the years, and given Nicholas’ obvious enthusiasm for the wines, we felt should create a special cuvée for him in honor of his birth year, 2017."

The Dude “refined” is only bottled under extraordinary conditions, and the 2017 vintage fits the mold. Warm and dry conditions created 5 barrels of highly concentrated Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. 

Vineyards Selection: The Cabernet Sauvignon portion of the blend was selected from vineyards in Calistoga, Rutherford and Howell Mountain regions of the Napa Valley. The wine was treated to 20 months in 90% new French oak cooperage. 

Tasting Notes: Ripe blackcurrant compote, rhubarb, blueberry, herbs and vanilla on the nose. Rich, sumptuous and inviting, the wine possesses remarkable depth and structure to play off the intense dark fruit. Black cherry, mocha, espresso and new leather add shades of nuance.
