The Arzuaga winery in Valladolid, part of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, produces wines from century-old vineyards on clay-limestone soils, yielding low quantities but high quality. The La Planta estate, acquired in the early 1990s, benefits from an ideal climate for grape ripening. The vineyards, mostly over 20 years old, primarily grow Tinto Fino, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
Arzuaga Reserva Especial 2019 is made with meticulous care, from manual harvest and selection to fermentation in wooden vats and aging for 24 months in new French oak barrels. The wine has an intense purple-red color, complex aromas of fruit, spices, tobacco, and caramel, and a fresh, meaty palate with a long, spicy finish.
Best enjoyed with roasted red meats, game, cheeses, blue fish, or dark chocolate desserts, it should be served at 16º-18ºC and decanted when opened.
