The 2020 "Il Caggio IPSUS" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG is a distinguished single-vineyard Sangiovese crafted by the Mazzei family, renowned for their centuries-old winemaking heritage. Sourced from the Il Caggio vineyard near Castellina in Chianti, this wine embodies the family's dedication to producing the finest expression of Chianti Classico.

The 2020 vintage presents a luminous ruby-garnet hue, with an exquisitely defined nose featuring notes of cherries, fresh plums, blood orange, and subtle cedar wood undertones. On the palate, it is polished and refined, showcasing fine-grained tannins and a well-articulated fruit profile of cherries and wild raspberries, culminating in a juicy and characterful finish.

The 2020 is multi-layered and wide-ranging and exudes class. Around 40% of the batches were macerated under water, which gives the wine a classic flavour. But there is also a hint of exoticism. Beautiful floral and savoury nuances emerge on the finish. This is a very special wine."

The wine has been successful in every year I have tasted it (the first vintage was 2015), but I think that special attention should be paid to a vintage like 2020, which was rather warm. Indeed, the Ipsus offers primarily primary fruits, but also hints of smoke and light spices. There is cherry against caraway or cassis against cardamom.
