Medium to deep garnet-brick in color, the 1998 Pavie prances out of the glass with showy notes of black cherry preserves, stewed plums, and kirsch leading to suggestions of sandalwood, menthol, crushed rocks, and iron ore with a waft of potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and impactful, delivering shimmery yet rich black fruits and loads of exotic spice sparks, supported by amazing tension and satiny tannins, finishing on an epically long-lasting anise note. This is stunning! It still has 15-20+ years. (LPB, 12/2023)

Tertiary white truffle and smoked earth notes curl out of the glass here, with brickish red tones around the edge of the still-ruby core. Still vibrating with life at almost 25 years old, nuanced and delicate with blackberry and soft crushed raspberry coulis. Saffron on full display, along with smoked caramel and freshly crushed mint leaf that is almost more pronounced on the finish here than in any other in the lineup. Part of the oustanding vintages series within this vertical. (01/2022)

The first vintage for Gérard Perse, the 1998 Pavie is drinking beautifully today and offers a layered, rich, yet seamless and elegant character. Blackcurrants, new leather, tobacco, chocolate, and dried flowers characteristics all emerge from this beauty and it has sweet tannins, a flamboyant, sexy texture, and no hard edges. (12/2018)

This wine still possesses a dense, youthful, plum/garnet color to the rim, with very little lightening. The first vintage for Pavie under Chantal and Gérard Perse, the 1998 is full-bodied, showing lots of cedar wood, forest floor, roasted herbs, black cherry and blackcurrant and new saddle leather. It is quite full-bodied, opulent and seems to be just entering its plateau of full maturity, where it should last another 15-20 years. (RP, 08/2015)

Lovely, and in a great spot now. The mulled currant, fig and boysenberry fruit is fully into its secondary phase, while the backdrop of singed cedar and alder notes plays a supporting role. Keeps a fresh tobacco accent through the finish, with a lingering graphite echo. (JM, 03/2017)

The 1998 Pavie was Gerard Perse’s second vintage after buying the property and it was actually matured in 200% new oak. Now at two decades, it continues to be attired with a fresh and very attractive bouquet, blackberry, mulberry, clove and bay leaf, just a touch of Italian delicatessen in the background. I like the definition here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and a keen thread of acidity, quite classic in style with tobacco and a light seaweed influence towards the persistent finish. This is ageing supremely well and you can another 10 to 15 years of drinking pleasure here. Excellent. (NM, 02/2018)
