VINTAGE NOTES The 2022 vintage saw a continuation of the severe drought that started in 2021. On 4/19/2021 the water from Lake Mendocino was shut off and remained shut off until 10/9/22. No water at all was made available for Agriculture from the lake. The use of many other water sources was either restricted or completely prohibited. The ongoing lack of soil moisture led to a second year of weak shoot growth and poor fruit set. Overall, the crop in North Coast was about 10% below normal. After the total disaster of 2020 (which had two major fires in the middle of the growing season) and the small 2021 harvest, wineries continued to struggle to find fruit. The lack of supply of grapes was partially offset by a drop in consumption starting in the second half of 2022. The 2022 vintage produced another small crop of high-quality grapes. We sourced our 2022 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from our Gap’s View Vineyard and from our River Road Grape Farm; both vineyards in the Sonoma Coast that I own through Russian River Partners. I manage the farming at both sites which is always a big plus. I always focus first on the vineyard site, second on the farming, and third on the winemaking. We used about 25% new French cooperage on the 2022 cuvee.
TASTING NOTES The nose offers Red Plum, and Black Raspberry Blossom, and Spruce. On the palate there are notes of Red Plum Skin, Black Raspberry, and warm, wet rock. This is a classic Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir with a lovely texture and abundant, but subtle, structure. (E.g. it has a lot of structure but not like Cabernet. It is softer and rounder with very supple tannins) The Sonoma Coast is the only place I source Pinot Noir from. I believe that the top New World Pinot Noirs come predominantly from this special slice of Sonoma County.
