INSCRIPTION PINOT NOIR
Inscription is classic Oregon Pinot Noir from the prestigious Willamette Valley AVA.
This wine beautifully showcases the unique and authentic place Oregon holds in the
world of fine wine.
TASTING NOTES
This is a big, bold Pinot Noir that opens with bright, uplifting aromatics of raspberry,
cranberry, marionberry and some leather, orange zest, rose and caramel. This wine
does not wait to develop on the palate – rather, it opens robustly with a rush of dark
fruit and delicious cocoa notes. Initial flavors of black cherry, raspberry, cocoa and
red plum are joined by juniper berries, forest floor, clove, spice, cedar and tobacco.
The flavors continue to linger through a satisfying finish.
WINEMAKING PROCESS
Each lot was fermented in small batches. Select lots underwent whole cluster
fermentation – some destemmed and some with stem inclusion. Clusters were cold
soaked for 48 hours with daily punch downs and pump overs. For further
concentration of flavor and color, as much as 10% of the juice was bled off using the
Saignée method. Fermentation was in stainless steel open top tanks with daily punch
downs and pump overs. Aged eight months in French oak barrels.
VINTAGE NOTES
A highly successful vintage began with cool, wet conditions in the spring that
delayed budbreak, foreshadowing a late harvest. That concern dissipated with a
dramatic warming trend that began with budbreak in late April and continued into
June. Bloom occurred between June 10 and 20, making this the shortest period
between budbreak and bloom since King Estate’s founding. Perfect summer
weather was interrupted by a short heat spike in mid-August when highs hit triple
digits. Harvest began Sept. 12 with first fruit in from our own estate vineyard.
After suspending harvest briefly for a storm system that began on Sept. 23,
activity ramped back up on Oct. 1 and finished two weeks later, right before more
rains arrived.
