2023 ‘1448'
Amador County (Shenandoah Valley)
The 2023 vintage of ‘1448’ has deep dark color that clings to the inside of a wine glass. The
hues are bright and youthful. The aromas lead with blue and black fruits most notably
black raspberry along with blackberry and mulberry. The bouquet features sweet vanilla,
hazelnut, and caramel. The flavors are rich and savory with plenty of soft ripe fruit framed
by toasted oak creaminess. The tannins are mature and add richness and texture to a
smooth finish that is free of drying astringency.
TASTING NOTES
‘1448’ is the elevation of our winery in Amador County’s Shenandoah Valley, where
diurnal temperature shifts play a crucial role in winemaking. Unlike the Sacramento
Valley, our daytime highs are similar, but cooler alpine air lowers nighttime temperatures
significantly. This large temperature swing enhances color, acidity, and overall character
in the grapes, producing wines with greater depth and complexity. While higher
elevations bring cooler climates, frost limits commercial vineyards to around 3,000 feet. At
1,448 feet, we are in the ideal range for varieties like Zinfandel and Barbera, allowing them
to develop rich flavors while maintaining balance and structure.
ABOUT THE WINE
VARIETALS: 53% Petit Verdot, 29% Petit Sirah, 5% Tannat, 5%
Barbera, 3% Teroldego, the balance (5%) is a combination of,
Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Grenache,
Tempranillo, Touriga, and Graciano.
ACIDITY: 0.65 g/100ml TA, 3.56 pH
ALCOHOL: 13.9% by vol.
