2019 Cabernet Sauvignon MOUNT VEEDER NAPA VALLEY
Lokoya is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations. These wines are 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered—resulting in the purest expression of place. They are powerful wines that reflect the intense individuality of each mountain.
Appellation and Vineyard
Bathed in sunlight on the western ridges of the Mayacamas Mountains at the northern end of the Mount Veeder appellation, the Veeder Peak estate vineyard sits at 1,800 feet in elevation. Since 1995, Lokoya has produced a Cabernet Sauvignon from a selection of blocks situated on the steep, mountainous terrain. Struggling in this volcanic soil forces the vines to seek out nutrients and in turn produce berries with intensely concentrated fruit. The wines display defining characteristics of violets and blue fruit with powerful tannins and exceptional aging potential.
Winemaker Comments
“Mount Veeder was named in honor of Peter Veeder, a Presbyterian minister who was part of a burgeoning 19th century German community on this mountain at the southern edge of the Mayacamas range. The first wines from Mount Veeder were produced by Stelham Wing in 1864, and that winemaking tradition continues to this day. The geology here is primarily made up of sedimentary soils with some volcanic pockets, and because of its proximity to San Pablo Bay, the area enjoys an early afternoon cooling effect before any other Napa Valley mountain region. Mount Veeder wines tend to show this unique combination of soils and climate in extraordinary ways, and the 2019 Lokoya is no exception. It offers blueberry pie, a hint of molasses, jasmine floral notes, Asian spice, toast and a lifted acidity that combines with a backbone of structural tannins to create a forever finish.”

“Another riveting wine, the 2019 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon has a Château Latour-like stature and regalness, with full-bodied richness and incredible concentration, as well as structure, on the palate. Cassis, blueberry liqueur, lead pencil shavings, crushed stone, and graphite notes all define the nose, and it hits the palate with incredible power and opulence, yet stays pure, flawlessly balanced, and has a finish that won't quit. This is as brilliant as Cabernet gets, and Carpenter is clearly playing with the best in the business. Give bottles 4-5 years if you can and it will cruise for 30-40 years.”
