The 2005 Shiraz-Marsanne “Lost Highway” contains 10% Marsanne. Purple-colored, it offers toasty notes, floral aromas from the Marsanne, and plenty of meaty, blueberry fragrances from the Shiraz. At the moment, the wine’s structure is more obvious than the fruit. There is ample tannin which has yet to be fully integrated. It will require significant cellaring of at least a decade. Domenic Torzi is the man behind these wines. He believes in non-interventionist winemaking including, among other things, wild yeast fermentations, no acid additions, and bottling without fining and filtration. (JM)

Dark purple. Rich dark berry and kirsch on the nose, with a strong graphite accent. Lush, creamy and deep, with powerful, liqueur-like blackberry and cassis flavors energized by a bright mineral jolt. Expands and gains in sweetness with air while maintaining an urgent, vibrant quality. Highly impressive stuff. These wines were made at Torbreck by Dave Powell. (JR)
