Winemaker Notes

There is a generous sweet core of fruit that offers plenty of flesh right across the palate. Cassis persists on the palate, with baked blackberry pie pastry flavours. Mulberries add a dark, slightly leafy nuance, balanced by the impression of fresh pouring cream. Baking spices abound. The acidity is tight and persistent, a lovely foil to the generous fruits and fine-grained tannins. There is the slightest suggestion of olive brine and kalamata tapenade rounding out a lovely medium bodied wine.

When it comes to cabernet sauvignon, Penfolds hits a sweet spot with its less ambitious though no less beautiful second tier (407 in South Australia, 704 in Napa Valley… both of which are significantly less expensive than the prime selections—707 or, in California, Quantum and Oakville). The fruit on this 2020 is black as night, with the warm intensity of umeboshi plums. Then the flavors last on cassis and the herbal, woody scent of rosemary. There’s juiciness to the currant flavor, bursting with ripeness, creating a lovely textural bliss. This should age with grace.

Milk chocolate oak tannins, typically Napa. Red currant, mulberry, anise and a whiff of menthol, the structural latticework an edgy beam across the finish. While this is distinctly full-weighted, it is more savory than most wines from the region due, perhaps, to the challenging vintage conditions and the need for abstemious fruit selection. Handled very well. I like it. Drink or hold.
