Bud break began at the beginning of April, ahead of historical
averages. The weather at bloom, was hot with dry winds. The
key factor of the vintage, however, came at the end of June,
when a heat dome descended upon the Walla Walla Valley and
all of the west coast. It shattered all previous temperature
records. Temperatures did cool down in September and
October, allowing for extended hang time, resulting in ripe,
beautifully structured fruit.

The Contender always reminds me of the flavors and
characteristics of wonderful Asian cuisine. Roasted duck,
blackberry jam, fig jam, soy, and hoisin sauce mixed with black
truffles. It also has sweet notes of marshmallow, crème
fraiche, and French vanilla ice cream. This wine shows more
secondary and tertiary notes early, with the fruit hidden in
the dense core of the wine. The primary notes of fruit I get
are ripe mango and just a hint of blackberry. For the patient
collector waiting 5-7 years is the best way to have the wine
show itself. The 2021 Contender contains a small percentage
of Marsanne, around 3%.
