Vineyard Manager Michael Wolf:

The 2014 rains came late in the season, providing enough soil moisture for the vines to grow well. It was a warm vintage, overall, but without damaging heat spikes, which allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and completely. There was a bit of time to catch our collective breath after the August 24th earthquake, as the fruit continued to ripen evenly, in spite of the chaos. Harvest was accomplished over an extended period of time, beginning on 9/19 and wrapping up on 10/13. Thanks to the temperate weather, there was no sense of urgency about harvest timing or logistics. 2014 yields were near historical norms, with the younger blocks of the J.J. Cohn vineyard coming into their own, and performing very well. Throughout the property, maturity was very uniform, and overall fruit quality was exceptional.

Winemaker Celia Welch writes of the 2014 Scarecrow:

The consistency of this vintage during the growing season has, not surprisingly, manifested itself in the overall impression of the finished wine. Lovely cassis, black plum, violets, dried blackberries on the vine, baking spices, chestnut, and just a hint of fresh earth interconnect in the very forward aromas of this unmistakably Rutherford Cabernet. On the palate, the entry is balanced and elegant, polished but with a clear density, a flavor core that adds gravitas and suggests ageability. The finish is of wild plums, black cherry jam, and a hint of warm vanilla.

The 2014 growing season saw some long-awaited relief from an epic California drought, giving us less rainfall than normal but enough to give the vines a bit more energy during Spring. The summer season was relatively mild, while the critical ripening months of September and October saw nearly perfect conditions, with cool nights and warm, dry days. The blocks for Scarecrow were hand-harvested between September 19 and October 13, 2014. A total of 1500 cases were bottled.

Critical Acclaim

100 points Jeb Dunnuck

Possibly the wine of the vintage is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon which is a more elegant, seamless wine compared to the more brooding and backward 2015. Exhibiting a deep purple color and utterly heavenly notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, white flowers, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, insane purity of fruit, ultra-fine tannin, and a finish that won’t quit. While a big, powerful wine, it’s the purity of fruit and tannin quality that sets this incredible wine at the top of the pyramid. Hats off to winemaker Celia Welch! (12/2017)

The utterly perfect 2014 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon (1,500 cases) has everything one could possibly want in a Cabernet. Inky purple-colored to the rim, with a glorious nose of white flowers, crème de cassis, hints of blackberry and boysenberry, some licorice and forest floor are followed by an enormously concentrated wine with fabulous purity, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and texture, a length of nearly a minute, and stunning flavors, with flawless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol. This is a great, great wine and certainly one of the Cabernet Sauvignons of this vintage. (RP, 12/2016)

96+ points Vinous

The 2014 Scarecrow comes across as understated and refined today. Some of that may be the personality of the year. The 2014 was also bottled relatively recently, which makes me think it could turn out to be even better than this note suggests. Soft, silky tannins and exceptional purity of flavor are two of the signatures in this exceptionally beautiful, captivating Cabernet Sauvignon. Scarecrow can often be powerful and virile. In 2014, however, it is a wine of finesse. (AG, 10/2016)

95 points Wine Spectator

Beautifully crafted, this style captures the essence of Rutherford, with a mix of dusty, loamy earth, tar, tobacco and dark berry flavors. A textural triumph, showing depth and muscle to the tannins and a long, full finish. (JL, 11/2017)
